Gamuda Land, the property development arm of Gamuda Berhad, envisaged to promote building sustainable and integrated township developments in Malaysia and internationally, aimed to developed a Low Carbon City Framework (LCCF) as guideline for their future township development in-lined with national target for carbon emission reduction. The corporation began the sustainability advocation with The Gamuda Green Plan 2025, a comprehensive framework charting tangible targets driven on ESG dimensions set forth over the next five years and beyond. The plan commits the entire Group to the specific steps to reduce direct and indirect corporate greenhouse gases emission intensity by 30% in 2025 and by 45% in 2030.
Green Quarter is appointed as the consultant to craft the LCCF for one of the Gamuda’s premiere townships, Gamnda Cove, with the aim of thefollowing outputs:
There are six elements of measurement under the Gamuda Cove Low Carbon City Framework (LCCF), namely: Urban Planning, Building, Urban Transport, Energy, Water, and Waste. Each of the elements of measures consists of different performance criteria to monitor and track the performance of Gamuda Cove towards its target.
With implementation of low carbon city strategies, a 45% carbon reduction from the BAU scenario of Gamuda Cove is possible. The Mobility element contributed to half of the reduction, with 46% of the reduction share predominately from the transport mode shift from private to public transport. The second major contribution to carbon emission reduction in Gamuda Cove is the energy element, contributing to a 45% reduction. Energy efficient buildings through enhancing passive design and optimizing active system are the key strategies in reducing carbon emissions under the energy element. Water and waste element, contribute to 10% and 1 % respectively, of the carbon emission reduction share.
The success of LCCF for Gamuda Cove has received a five-diamond recognition at the Low Carbon City 2030 Challenge (LCC2030C). This township is also the first private township to receive this recognition from the Environment and Water Ministry in collaboration with the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC). This recognition underscores Gamuda Land’s approach to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles under the Gamuda Green Plan 2025 and is also a testament that with the Green Quarter’s sustainability strategies tailored for Gamuda Cove, the goal of a low-carbon city are on the right track in their sustainability efforts.
